Your Eye Makeup Brush guide: Types of Makeup Brushes... synthetic makeup brushes verses natural hair brushes
Makeup brushes are made with either man made synthetic bristles or the bristles are natural hair from a variety of animals. So which type of brushes are better? From a quality stand point, natural is better. However some synthetic brushes work better. Here's the differences between the two:
Synthetic Haired Makeup Brushes
- Made of man-made material using either nylon or polyester filaments.
- Lose their shape over time
- Common types are taklon and nylon. Taklon is a fine-grade nylon that is less absorbent than natural hair but has a shorter life than natural hair bristles.
- Since Synthetic hair has no cuticle, its easier to keep clean compared to natural-haired brushes as the filaments do not trap or absorb makeup. However, when cleaning, Synthetic brushes can lose their shape and shed more hair than natural hair makeup brushes.
- Synthetic makeup brushes are best for applying cream types of makeup products like liquid/cream foundation, cream blushes, cream eyeshadows, eyeliners and such.
- Need to be replaced a lot more frequently than natural brushes
Natural-Haired Makeup Brushes
- Natural-haired brushes are made from natural hair like goat, pony, mink, sable, badger and blue squirrel.
- Slightly more difficult to care for compared to synthetic hair makeup brushes. Since the hairs are natural, they have a cuticle which makeup can absorb into and get stuck. Frequent cleaning is required.
- Used for powder makeup applications: face powder, powder eyeshadow, powder blush, since the natural hairs can hold powder better then Synthetic brushes.
- Softer to the touch and feels better while applying makeup.
- Natural hair makeup brushes hold more powder thus giving a heavier coverage. Great for eyeshadows and face powders.
