Eye Makeup Looks: The Smokey eye
This is a basic step by step tutorial to create a dramatic smokey eye. Here is everything you need from what eyeshadow shades to use to which brushes you need to apply a smokey eye. For sultry, celebrity smokey eyes, follow these simple step-by-step instructions.
How to apply the smokey eye makeup
- Blending is important to the perfect smokey eye. And to blend properly, eye makeup brushes are a must with this makeup application.
- You'll also need an eyeshadow primer. Eyeshadow primers keep eye makeup in place and zap out any creasing of the eyeshadow. And with the smokey eye, you'll be using heavy makeup that can smudge if not kept in place.
- The last important thing to remember when creating a smokey eye is the makeup colors. The key is to use dark, rich colors. In this tutorial, we'll be using the basic terms of placement such as highlight, lid and crease areas. You can also check out color tutorials for more eyeshadow color options.
Tips for the perfect smokey eye
Eyeshadow Primer: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, Eyeshadow Base
Black Eyeliner
Black Mascara

Makeup Brushes: Blending shadow brush and Round tip shadow Smudge Brush
Step One: Eyeshadow Primer: Start by applying the Primer Potion by Urban Decay over the entire lid area. Allow to dry fro a few seconds.
Step Two: Highlight Color: Apply the lightest highlight eyeshadow to the brow bone area. The highlight is important as it makes the dark shadow stand out even more.
Step Three: Base Lid Color: You'll be using the cream eyeshadow for the lids. Cream shadows generally come in more vibrant shades. But you can use a powder eyeshadow instead. Apply the shadow over the entire bottom lid with fingertips, stopping at the crease and blending. Allow to dry completely before starting next step.
Step Four: Crease Color: Using a shade of shadow that is slightly lighter then your darkest eyelid color, blend the shadow across the crease extending slightly out past the lashes.
Step Five: Bottom lash Eyeliner: Apply liner acoss bottom lashes with a black eyeliner pencil.
Step Six: Bottom lash Shadow: With your rounded tip shadow brush, lightly smudge the darkest eyeshadow along the base of the eyelashes. Finish the look with loads of mascara. You can also line the top eyelashes with liner.
