Tired of going to the salon to get your eyebrows waxed and walking out with red, puffy skin? Why not wax yourself at home? Waxing your brows is actually easier than you think. All you need is a real steady hand and the proper kit.
There are many hair removal methods on the market: cold strips, roll ons and more. We recommend using the type that you heat in a melting pot. Don’t worry, sounds scary huh? Not at all. These types of kits are small enough to store under your bathroom sink, inexpensive and super simple to heat up… you just plug it in! This type of wax is the most gentle and can be used on any part of your body. With a one-time minimal investment, a great wax kit should last you for hundreds of uses.
- Wax Warmer: GIGI is the best kind of wax warmer. It simply plugs in to heat. Then turn it off and the wax cools and turns hard again to avoid any spills.
- Small, thin waxing applicators
- Waxing Strips. The non-woven kind is the best
- Wax residue remover for skin
1. Pin all hair away from your face. It’s also best to use a large cotton head band to control any stray hairs.
2. Clean the brow area. You can cleanse the face first, but we recommend just using a damp cloth, swept across the skin, to remove any makeup. No need to scrub the area!
3. Comb the eyebrows so all the hairs are lying flat.
4. Take the applicator stick and break it in half if you’re using this on yourself. A shorter stick is much easier to handle. Dip just the end into the wax about ¼ inch up. You don’t need a lot, as you can always re-dip the stick and get more to finish the area.
5. Start by gently sweeping the wax at the thickest point of your brow to the outer corner, moving in the direction of the hair growth. While looking in the mirror, if you’re doing your right brow… you’ll move left to right. And for the right brow, right to left. If you didn't get enough wax to do the whole are under the eyebrow, simply dip again and apply more. Do not apply too thick!
6. Next, take a cloth strip and place it so it covers all the wax. Glide your fingertips over the cloth to ensure adhesion. Grab the end of the cloth that’s closest to your hair line. You are going to pull the cloth in the opposite direction that you applied the wax. As fast as you can, rip the cloth toward the opposite eye. If any residue is left, take the cloth, fold it in half and use that to briskly pat off the residue from the wax. The use a cotton ball and wax remover cream to soothe and remove residue.
To do the middle are between your brows
1. First decide where you’ll be waxing. Hold the applicator stick straight up from the corner of your eye. That’s where your eyebrow should start.
2. Dip the wax; apply staring closest to your nose area and move up. You’ll be applying the wax upward. This are is best done in 2 applications instead of trying to do it all at once.
3. Apply the cloth strip, run fingertips across the strip to smooth. Then pull the strip away, moving down. Repeat to do other side, while avoiding overlapping any area you just waxed.
To Wax Above the Brows
You’ll do the top in the same you you waxed under the eyebrows. Start applying wax near the middle and end near hairline. When waxing the top of your brows, you just want to remove any stray and baby hair’s there. You shape the brows when doing the underneath.
Waxing Tips
- To remove any excess wax or residue, use a cloth strip to blot off the excess.
- It’s best to wash face right after waxing to close the pores.
- To help with redness, daub a cotton ball in milk and swipe it across the waxed area. Yep milk. The hormones in cow’s milk help to remove redness and will soothe the skin.
- When in doubt, don’t pull!!!! This means, if you think you applied wax where you shouldn’t or where it will remove more hair than you want to… take the wax off! Just start over. There’s nothing worse than an eyebrow wax oops. To remove wax.. Use a silicone based hair product. Anything like a frizz serum, shine spray or hair oil works great. Just apply with a cotton ball and wipe until wax is completely removed. If you’re going to reapply wax and try again, then you’ll need to use a facial cleanser to remove the oil before you start again.
- NEVER apply wax over a previously waxed area. This can seriously irritate the skin.
- To remove stringy wax while dipping your applicator, simply dip the stick, wipe off wax on one side of stick and pull up really quick.
